AMERICUS, Ga. | A huge second quarter propelled Georgia Southwestern State University past Georgia College & State University 70-41 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday (Jan. 25) evening at the Storm Dome.
The Bobcats fell to 10-7 overall and to 3-4 in the PBC, while the Hurricanes improved to 9-6 and 5-2. GCSU looks to bounce back against Clayton State University Monday (Jan. 27) at 5:30 p.m. inside the Centennial Center. The PBC game against the Lakers is a rescheduled contest due to the winter weather the area experienced earlier this week.
The scoring started evenly matched for the opening of the first quarter, with each team staying within a four points of each other. However, an 8-2 run towards the end of the quarter gave the Bobcats the momentum they needed to enter the second quarter with a seven-point lead at 18-11.
Things would hit a wall for GCSUÂ in the second quarter, as the Hurricanes outscored the Bobcats 24-4. While Miracle Parker would provide four points in the form of a tip-in and a layup, they would be the only points the Bobcats would manage for the 10 minutes. An 18-0 run by the Hurricanes completed by a Destiny Garrett three-point shot would flip the game on its head, giving Georgia Southwestern a 13-point lead (35-22) heading to the locker room.
The closest the Bobcats would get the rest of the way was 11 points in the early stages of the third quarter. The Hurricanes - behind a 17-0 run to start the fourth quarter - lead by as many as 33 points in the waning minutes of the contest.
Jada Warren, Chandler Davis, Evie DePetro, and Parker would share the honors of most points scored on the night at six, while Camryn James would take home the honors of most rebounds with nine, followed by Warren's six.
