North Georgia holds off GCSU 75-69 in OT thriller

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Cayden Charles scored 22 points to lead four University of North Georgia men's basketball players in double figures as the Nighthawks outscored Georgia College & State University by six points in overtime to record a 75-69 Peach Belt Conference victory Wednesday (Jan. 8) evening at the Centennial Center.

The Nighthawks improved to 11-4 overall and to 3-0 inside the league, while the Bobcats slipped to 5-8 and 0-3. GCSU returns to action Saturday (Jan. 11) afternoon at 3:30 p.m. when they travel to St. Augustine, Florida, for a PBC game against Flagler College.

North Georgia, which led 35-27 at the half, expanded its lead to 11 points (61-50) with 5:05 to play in regulation after Charles sank a three-pointer. That would be the final point for the Nighthawks in regulation as the GCSU defense stiffen. The Bobcats connected on three three-pointers during the 11-0 spurt as Luke Krawczyk, Ian Davis and Zyair Greene drained long-distance shots. Greene's shot from the top of the key was part of a four-point play that knotted the score at 61 with 1:25 remaining.

Neither team could score over the final 85 seconds of regulation forcing the extra time. Dallas Clayton's jumper 39 seconds into the overtime gave GCSU a 63-61 lead. The game, which saw 10 lead changes and five ties, saw the lead flip back and forth over the next three possessions. The Bobcats, which only led for 2:41, took their final lead at 68-66 after a Krawczyk three-pointer with 2:23 to play.

UNG took the lead for good at 70-68 as Charles converted two free throws with 90 seconds left. The Nighthawks sealed the game as they hit three free throws in the final minute. The Nighthawks were 20-of-34 from the charity stripe, while the Bobcats were 6-of-10.

Clayton and Krawcyzk posted career highs for the Bobcats with Clayton, who was 8-of-10 from the floor, leading GCSU with 16 points, while Krawcyzk had 13 on four three-pointers. Greene added 14 more, while Davis had 12. James Nichols III lead the Bobcats with seven rebounds, while Clayton and Krawcyzk registering six apiece.
