MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Georgia College & State University's Shelby Jones tossed a two-hitter, but it wasn't enough as the Bobcats fell to Mars Hill University 2-1 in a softball game under the Friday (Feb. 7) lights at the Bobcat Softball Field.
The Bobcats are still searching for their first home win, as they fell to 1-4, while the Lions climbed to 4-1. GCSU's season continues with a two games Saturday (Feb. 8) against No. 23 Middle Georgia State University at 3:30 p.m. and a second game against Mars Hill at 6 p.m.
Jones would begin her night strong as she struck out three in the first inning and would continue with a strong performance in the second, forcing three quick groundouts. However, Mars Hill's Daci Sarver would collect the Lions' first hit of the game, swiftly followed by an error and fielder's choice to force Sarcer around the bases as an unearned run.
The Lions would strike again in the sixth inning, opening with a single by Maia Shotler, who would come around to score on another miscue that would tack another unearned run.
Kacie Wiggins attempted to get the Bobcat bats in the bottom of the seventh with a triple that was laced down the left field line. She later scored on a Kam Caldwell single; however, the Bobcats were not able to complete the comeback.
Jones (0-2) struck out eight in the complete-game effort. Tea Cornett (3-0) would collect the win for the Lions, giving up six hits and grabbing four strikeouts.
Wiggins would lead the Bobcats in hits with two, while Caldwell, Karlie Gutierrez, Caroline Pollock, and Stephanie Condland each would get a hit in the contest.
