Warren becomes all-time leading rebounder for GCSU in 67-65 win over Flagler

MILLEDEVILLE, Ga. | Jada Warren grabbed 18 rebounds to become the all-time leader for Georgia College & State University program history as the Bobcats edged Flagler College 67-65 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday (Feb. 8) afternoon at the Centennial Center.

The Bobcats improved to 13-9 overall and climbed back to .500 in the PBC with a record of 6-6, while Flagler fell to 4-7 and 8-12. GCSU looks to extend its winning streak Wednesday (Feb. 12) night at home with a midweek PBC contest against the University of South Carolina-Beaufort at 5:30 p.m.

Warren, a senior forward from Norcross, Georgia, wasted little time grabbing four rebounds to cross the 1,000 plateau and with 7:58 left in third quarter she collected her 11th board to become the GCSU all-time leader in rebounds, surpassing May Neloms' (1984-88) total of 1,006. Warren, who entered the weekend ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II in total rebounds and rebounds per game (13.9), now has posted 1,014 rebounds in her career.

The Bobcats started hot against the Saints, spreading the scoring evenly, with layups by Warren and Camryn James and jumpers from Evie DePetro and Miracle Parker, giving GCSU a quick eight-point lead at 12-4. Flagler chipped into the lead as the first quarter dwindled, but Deshona Gaither made consecutive layups to put the Bobcats up by seven, (18-11).

GCSU started the second quarter even better than the first, beginning with a 12-0 run to go up by 19 (30-11), fueled by three-pointers from Parker and DePetro. The Bobcats extended their lead to 22 points (44-22) after a Gaither free throw with 96 second left before halftime.

Three-point shots by Sharale McCormick, Destiny McClendon, Abby Smith, and two from Marley Smith would fuel a Flagler  comeback that brought the Lions within seven to end the third quarter (54-47).

Flagler started the fourth quarter with a 12-6 run to bring them within one point of GCSU at 60-59 after a McClendon free throw with 2:36 to play, but that would be as close as they would get as the Bobcats hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to thwart the Flagler comeback.

Parker led the Bobcats in points with 14, followed by Willis (11) and DePetro (11) in double figures. Willis also led the Bobcats in assists with five.
