Saints outlast Bobcats 55-54 in hard fought battle

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Georgia College & State University fell to Flagler College 55-54 in a hard fought Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday (Jan. 17) afternoon at the Centennial Center.

The Saints improved to 8-9 overall and 3-6 in conference play while the Bobcats dropped to 6-11 overall and 2-7 in conference. GCSU returns to the Centennial Center Wednesday (Jan. 21) evening to host Lander University at 7:30 p.m. The Exchange Bank Teddy Bear Toss will take place during this game.

Flagler scored the first basket of the game with a three pointer from Gabby Bush, but the Bobcats quickly responded with a layup by Deshona Gaither. The quarter remained balanced with the teams trading baskets as there were four ties in the opening quarter. The second quarter started out the same way until the Saints gained control and went on an 8-0 run to end the half up 32-22.

The game returned to an even state after the break, as both teams struggled to find their rhythm. Flagler still held the advantage, and the Bobcats were able to cut it to an eight point deficit before the Saints extended their lead past 10.

The teams continued to exchange baskets in the final period before Nylah Nuri knocked down three clutch three pointers down the stretch to put the Bobcats up by one. Caroline Beavin and Elizabeth Wynn also added some big baskets along the way.

Flagler took their final lead of the game from a three pointer by Carleigh Grimm with a minute remaining. Late fouls and a jump ball in their favor gave the Saints a one point win.

Wynn led GCSU in scoring with 12 points and Nuri followed close behind with 11. Bolden and Beavin both added nine points. Wynn also finished with 12 rebounds and Bolden grabbed 10.
