MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Elizabeth Wynn's double-double led Georgia College & State University to a 56-49 win over Lander University in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball matchup Wednesday (Jan. 21) evening at the Centennial Center.
The Bobcats improved to 7-11 overall and 3-7 in conference play while the Bearcats fell to 6-11 overall and 4-6 in conference play. GCSU will travel to Morrow, Ga. Saturday (Jan. 24) afternoon to play Clayton State at 1:30 p.m. to start the second half of PBC play.
The Bobcats started the game on a 9-0 run. Lander got on the board after four minutes with a three pointer from guard Quadaija Langley. GCSU maintained control for the rest of the first period, shooting 50% from the floor while the Bearcats only shot 21%.
Both teams battled in the second quarter scoring 14 each. Lander was then able to cut the score deficit to one point with balanced scoring, but the Bobcats didn't let up. GCSU led 30-23 at the break.
Freshman guard
Caroline Beavin opened up the second half with a three pointer for the Bobcats just 30 seconds in before they went on a scoring drought for the next five minutes. Lander was able to close in on the Bobcats and tie the game at 38 with balanced scoring from their five. The Bobcats were outscored 17-12 in the third period.
GCSU's first six points of the last period came from free throws from
Deshona Gaither,
Natalia Bolden and Beavin. Lander fought to stay within six points for the rest of the quarter but the Bobcats stayed in control and closed out the game at the free throw line.
Wynn totaled 14 points for GCSU and tied her career-high in rebounds with 18.
Caroline Beavin finished with 12 points and
Deshona Gaither added 10.
Natalia Bolden also grabbed 10 rebounds.
