Gaither leads GCSU past Georgia Southwestern, 61-51

AMERICUS, Ga. | The Georgia College & State University women's basketball team earned a 61-51 Peach Belt Conference victory over Georgia Southwestern State University Saturday (Jan. 3) evening at the Storm Dome, led by a game-high 21 points from Deshona Gaither.

The Bobcats improved to 1-4 in conference play and 5-8 overall, while the Hurricanes fell to 3-2 in the Peach Belt and 7-5 overall. GCSU returns to action Wednesday (Jan. 7) evening at the University of North Georgi.a Tipoff against the Nighthawks is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Lynn Cottrell Arena. 

The opening quarter was evenly played before Georgia Southwestern built their momentum in the second quarter. A three pointer from Ray'Ven Robinson put the Hurricanes up 12 with three minutes left in the half. The Bobcats responded and bcut the deficit to seven (24-31) behind a layup and an and-one from Gaither and a pair of free throws from Elizabeth Wynn

GCSU carried that momentum into the second half, tying the game at 33 midway through the third quarter. Georgia Southwestern regained the lead again before the teams were tied again at 48, just two minutes into the fourth. The Bobcats took their first lead of the final quarter behind a free throw from guard Bailey Vick, pulling away and further extending their lead to secure the conference win in Americus. 

Freshman guard Caroline Beavin finished with nine points and Bailey Vick added seven. Natalia Bolden and Wynn led the Bobcats with six rebounds each, and Gaither added five of her own.
