DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. | The Georgia College & State University softball team came up short Saturday (Feb. 7) in their first two games at the Eagle Classic hosted by Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University at the Embry-Riddle Softball Field.
The Bobcats fell to No. 2 University of Tampa 7-2 in the opener before dropping a 6-1 decision against the University of West Alabama in the second game.
The Bobcats fell to 1-3 and will close out the classic with two more games Sunday (Feb. 8). The will have a rematch against West Alabama at 10 a.m. before facing the tournament host Eagles at 12:30 p.m.
Against Tampa, both teams were held scoreless until the third inning when the Spartans scored twice off GCSU starter
Sydney Garrett (1-1). Tampa added two more runs in the top of the fourth, before GCSU got a run back in the bottom half when on
Maddie Todd's sacrifice fly.
Tampa added a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to open up a 7-1 lead. GCSU scored its final run on
Stephanie Condland's single in the seventh.
GCSU had seven hits against Tampa as
Emily Hobbs and Todd had two hits apiece,
Reina Checo also clubbed a double for the Bobcats,
The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead against the Tigers in second inning of the nightcap. Condland singled to right field, scoring Checo, who led off the inning by reaching on an error. West Alabama took advance of a GCSU error in the fifth to take the lead 2-1. The Tigers added two insurance runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.
Tiffany Caban (0-2) took the loss for the Bobcats.
Condland accounted for half of GCSU hits in the nightcap as she had two of the four safeties for the Bobcats.
