ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. | Eckerd College held off Georgia College & State University 4-3 in a non-conference men's tennis match Tuesday (March 17) afternoon at the Fred Bullard Courts.
The Tritons improved to 6-4, while the Bobcats fell to 4-6. GCSU opens Peach Belt Conference action March 26 when they travel to Greenwood, South Carolina, for a 2 p.m. contest against Lander University.
GCSU opened the match by taking two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point.
Chase Martin and
Finn O'Neill won 6-3 at No. 1, while
Jakob Andergassen and
Braxton Wright also won by a 6-3 score at No. 2.
Eckerd won the first singles match that finished to tie the score at 1 before Martin won his match at No. 1 6-2, 6-4 to give the Bobcats a 2-1 advantage. However, the Tritons won the next three matches - two of which went three sets to clinch the match at 4-2. Wright earned the final GCSU point as he won a three-setter at No. 5 as each set went to a tiebreaker. Wright won by scores of 7-6 (2), 6-7 (2) and 7-6 (3).
