MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Georgia College & State University swept Emmanuel (Ga.) University in a midweek home doubleheader Tuesday (March 31) evening, winning the opener 8-0 in five innings before taking to a 15-4 victory in the nightcap also in five innings at the Bobcat Softball Field.
With the doubleheader sweep, the Bobcats improved to 14-14 overall, while the Lions fell to 4-32. GCSU returns to action when it travels to St. Augustine, Florida, to play a three-game series against Flagler College starting Thursday (April 2) evening at 6 p.m.
In game one,
Sydney Lancaster broke through scoring for the Bobcats in the first inning after reaching base and eventually scoring on a fielding error, giving GCSU a 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats had a huge third inning, scoring six runs on five hits.
Kimber Kent scored on a throwing error before RBIs by
Maddie Todd,
Stephanie Condland,
Kacie Wiggins, and Nobles brought more runners in to extend the lead to 7-0 at the end of the third.
Reina Checo added a solo home run in the fifth inning to close out the game. Checo finished 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Sydney Garrett earned the win in the circle for the Bobcats, walking one and striking out one in a dominant outing. Garrett pitched the first no-hitter in GCSU softball since March 7, 2015, when Marissa Boyette and Cassidy Rice did it in an 8-0 five-inning victory against Fort Valley State University. This is also the 15th no-hitter in program history.
In the nightcap, the Bobcats recorded 15 runs on 16 hits, overcoming an early 2-0 deficit to take the lead and pull away.
Emmanuel jumped out quickly behind a two-run single to center by Carson Stowe. GCSU answered with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the first, capped by a two-run single from
Maddie Todd.
The Bobcats erupted for six more runs in the second on six hits, highlighted by a triple from
Sydney Lancaster, an RBI double from
Reina Checo, and some stolen bases that allowed other runners to get home. They added two more runs in the third and three more in the fourth to extend the lead out of reach for the Lions.
Kimber Kent went 3-for-3 with a stolen base and scored three times. Lancaster finished 3-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored.
Maddie Todd was 2-for-2, also with two RBI and two runs scored.
Jacy Singleton earned the win in the circle for the Bobcats, pitching all five innings and allowing four runs on three hits while walking seven and striking out three.
