MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.-The Georgia College &
State University soccer team (8-1-2, 2-1-1 PBC) broke a school
record with 46 shots in a single game tonight (Oct. 7) in the 5-1
victory over Georgia Southwestern State University (3-10, 0-3 PBC)
at Bobcat Field.
The previous team record of shots taken in a single contest was
39 set Aug. 31, 2006 against Erskine College. Tonight the Bobcats
had 18 shots in the first period and 28 in the second with a grand
total of 46 for the night. They had 23 shots on goal for the night,
exactly half of their total shots. With defensive domination by
Georgia College, the offense managed to score five goals, four
coming in the first half alone.
Senior Hayley Ferrell
(Hampton, Ga.) contributed to the high shot count tonight
with seven while Jessica Newland
(Hiram, Ga.) had six including one goal. Newland's second
goal of the season came in the 39th minute.
The first goal of the night came in the 27th minute and was
attributed to Ally Treat
(Fayetteville, Ga.), her first of the season, assisted by
Karen
Bonilla (Manassas, Va.). Almost four minutes later,
Megan
McAlpin (Newnan, Ga.) sent one past the Hurricane
goalkeeper with help from Lyric Burnett
(Douglasville, Ga.).
The last goal of the first period came in the 43rd minute by
Jeni Day
(Marietta, Ga.). Her third goal this season was off a
give-and-go on the left side from Mary Byrne
(Lawrenceville, Ga.).
In the first half, Peach Belt Conference pick of the week,
Mary
Rob Plunkett (Augusta, Ga.) played all 45 minutes
without seeing a single shot from GSW. On the other side, the
Bobcats sent 11 shots her way and managed to save seven balls. In
the second half, Kristen Moore
(Newnan, Ga.) occupied the Georgia College net for 29:51
and saw no saves. For the remaining 15 minutes and nine seconds,
Megan Rothenberg (Knoxville, Tenn.) stepped in for
Moore.
In the 88th minute, GSW's Alyssa Goodwin sent one just over
Rothenberg's outstretched hands. Goodwin's goal was her first of
the season.
GSW goalkeeper Christy Drabek continued to see lots of action in
the second period. She made 12 saves giving her a total of 19 for
the night. Despite her best efforts, the Bobcats netted one more in
the 81st minute. Assisted by McAlpin, Burnett scored her second
goal of the season. She is now tied with Jamie Nevin (Grovetown,
Ga.) for third for school history with 11 career goals.
The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Oct. 11 as they visit
Newberry, S.C. to face Newberry College at 3 p.m.
