MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.
- The Georgia College & State University
soccer team (5-4-3, 1-0-2 PBC) tied North Georgia (4-3-2, 1-2-1
PBC) 1-1 after two overtimes at Bobcat Field this afternoon (Oct.
3). The tie is the second straight for the Bobcats and third this
season.
Both teams put up seven shots each in the first period, but both
came up dry. Fresh out of halftime, a Lyric Burnett
(Douglasville,
Ga.) pass found the foot of
senior classmate Kara Teresi
(Tampa,
Fla.) off a breakaway to net the
first goal of the game during the 47th minute. Teresi
now leads the Bobcats with three for the season, while Burnett
claimed her first assist for the 2009 campaign.
Not wasting any time, the Saints nearly answered back as Emily
Bowen sent a sliding shot to a diving Mary Rob Plunkett
(Augusta,
Ga.) in the 54th
minute. Plunkett got a hand on the ball to get the save but with
her lying prone on the ground the ball was still loose. As the
North Georgia offense scrambled to take advantage of the open goal,
the heady freshman Jamie Colcord
(Marietta,
Ga.) swooped in out of nowhere to
send the ball out of the box while falling into the net herself.
Unwilling to accept defeat, the Saints continued to work their
way into Bobcat territory. Kelsey Martin worked the ball into
Leanne South, who sent one past the Georgia College keeper to tie
things up at 1-1 in the 57th minute. The goal was
South's first this season.
Neither team scored during the remainder of the second period
despite Georgia College out-shooting North Georgia nine to three
that half. The Saints answered back in the first overtime putting
up two shots to the Bobcats' one.
Nearing the end of the second overtime, the 'Cats had a
spark of hope during the 107th minute, when Karen Bonilla
(Manassas,
Va.) lifted a pass over North
Georgia's diving keeper to Teresi. Teresi netted the ball and the
Bobcat bench stormed the field, only to be waved off by the
official. The home team retreated to the bench as Georgia College
was called offside, the goal negated, and clock continued to tick
down.
In goal, Plunkett tallied six saves for the contest, giving her
a total of 32 for the season. North Georgia's Kirsten Ross
collected seven saves in net. The 'Cats outshot the Saints
17-12 this afternoon and took the advantage on the corner kicks six
to four.
Georgia College is no stranger to overtimes, having faced nine
total for the 2009 campaign, four of which have reached double
overtime. However, the Bobcats have yet to lose in overtime play
this season, winning two and tying in three cases.
The Bobcats got a monkey off their backs in today's contest,
scoring the first GCSU goal at Bobcat field in 2009. Prior to
Teresi's early second-half strike, the 'Cats hadn't netted a
goal in 421:23 on the home pitch, dating back to the 2-0 Peach Belt
Conference (PBC) Quarterfinal win over Lander University Nov. 4,
2008.
Georgia College now has five points in the PBC Standings, good
for fifth place.
The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, Oct. 7 as they travel
to Savannah, Ga. to take on conference opponent No. 18 Armstrong
Atlantic State University at 3:30 p.m.
