MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Extending its win streak
to 10 games, No. 25 Georgia College & State University men's
basketball (16-2, 9-0 PBC) pounded UNC Pembroke (6-14, 2-9 PBC)
82-50 today in the Centennial Center.
The win puts Georgia College at a 9-0 Peach Belt Conference
(PBC) start, the best in school history. The previous mark was an
8-0 stretch to begin the 1999-2000 conference season, the only
Elite Eight year for Bobcat men's basketball.
Pacing the 'Cats with 17 points was senior guard
Graham
Martin (Marietta, Ga.), adding six assists, a quartet
of rebounds and three steals. Three of Ty Rowland's (Lilburn,
Ga.) field goals came from behind the arc, as the senior
guard finished with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Classmate
Jake Rios
(Bozeman, Mt.) fired in 10 points for his 12th
double-digit scoring game this year.
Senior forward Robert Thomas
(Mankato, Minn.) had a productive 12 minutes, scoring
eight points with six boards, two assists and three swats. Matching
him from the post was Reece Wiedeman
(Suwanee, Ga.) with eight points, and a game-best seven
boards in 14 minutes.
UNCP scored the first two points of the game, but after a
Rowland three just 1:12 into the game gave the Bobcats a 3-2
advantage, Georgia College would hold the lead for the remainder of
the contest. Rowland's shot sparked a big 21-2 run over the next
8:42, capped by a Trent Fildes
(Adelaide, Australia) three for a 21-4 lead with 10:02
left. Fildes finished with five points.
The lead never again was under double-digits, reaching its peak
at 37 on a pair of occasions.
Chris Hargrove was the only double-digit scorer for the Braves
at 10 points off the pine, with nine coming from starter Brandon
Thomas. Shahmel Brackett, 12th in the PBC at 14.2 points
per game, had just seven this evening.
Martin's three steals makes a three-way tie at seventh in school
history with 119 career swipes. Martin is locked up with
George Askew (1996-2000) and Aaron Clark
(2004-08) in that slot.
The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m.,
hosting North Georgia.
