GREENWOOD,
S.C. - The women's basketball
team at Georgia College & State University (7-4, 0-1 PBC) lost
its Peach Belt Conference (PBC) opener tonight to No. 21 Lander
University (10-1, 3-0 PBC) 84-66.
Lander's aggressive defense helped them cause 13 turnovers in
the first half and jump out to an early lead. The Bobcats got
within two when Antoinette Reames
(Orlando,
Fla.) assisted to Shandrea Moore
(Ft. Lauderdale,
Fla.) to make the score 8-6 and
that was the closest they would come the rest of the way as the
Bearcats never gave up the lead.
Georgia College was down by as many as 14 points in the first
half, but from an 8-2 run got within seven after a Dominique Huffin
(Tucker, Ga.) layup and then a free-throw to connect for
the three-point play. Huffin also hit one three-pointer in the
contest to put her at 122 in her career, one away from
Sherita Ballard (1987-91) at No. 10 on the
school's all-time three-point field goals list.
Chimere Jordan
(Gray, Ga.) led Georgia
College with 17 points and also had five rebounds. Reames and
Jessica
Baker (Snellville,
Ga.) each had 11 points. Reames
also had seven boards, while Baker's 11 points was a season-high,
tying a career-high she set against USC Aiken March 2, 2008. Huffin
aided the 'Cats with eight points while Candice Clark
(Warner Robins,
Ga.) and Tammeisha Law
(Athens,
Ga.) had seven and five boards,
respectively.
Lander jumped out to a 12-6 run in the second stanza and never
looked back. The Bobcats struggled to make shots and only hit .377
from the floor (26-69) and .313 (5-16) from three-point land.
Georgia College was out-rebounded 56-45 and had 20 turnovers in the
game.
Mukia Myrick had a rare four-point play for the Bearcats in the
second half that put Lander up 57-40 and teammate Shannon McKever
posted a double-double with 17 points and 14 boards.
Georgia College opens the PBC season with a loss for the
fourth-straight year.
The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Jan. 9 at 5:30 p.m.
traveling to No. 15 Clayton State University (11-1, 2-0 PBC). The
Lakers most recently beat the University of West Florida 70-59 Jan.
