MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Free-throws down the
stretch for the women's hoops team at Georgia College & State
University (21-7) gave them a 60-59 win Tuesday against Georgia
Southwestern (12-16) in overtime in Peach Belt Conference (PBC)
Tournament quarterfinal action.
Georgia College was down 23-20 at the half after only shooting
.280 (7-25) from the floor. The Hurricanes led by as many as 10
points in the second half when Jessica Bivins hit a three-pointer.
After the three, the Bobcats went on a 14-0 scoring run to take the
lead 34-32 when Antoinette Reames
(Orlando, Fla.) hit two free-throws with 10:33 left in the
second frame.
Things went back and forth between the teams in the second half
and Whitley Wiltz put the 'Canes up 52-50 after sinking a
free-throw.
Chimere Jordan
(Gray, Ga.) took the ball to the line after she was fouled
with 2.5 seconds to go regulation. Jordan hit the first and
Southwestern immediately called a timeout to try and freeze the
junior guard. After the timeout, Jordan walked calmly to the line
and sank the shot to tie the game at 52-52 sending it to overtime.
In overtime, Tammeshia Law
(Athens, Ga.) and Reames hit layups while Candice Clark (Warner
Robins, Ga.) and Shandrea Moore (Ft.
Lauderdale, Fla.) each sank two free-throws to push the
Bobcats past Georgia Southwestern. With GCSU up four Bivins hit a
meaningless three-pointer at the buzzer, but the Bobcats still won
60-59.
Three Bobcats had double-digits in the game as Jordan paced the
team with 22 points, eight boards, five steals and four blocks, a
career-high. Law set a career-high with 16 points. The junior
forward also had eight rebounds, two steals and a block. Moore had
15 points, two steals and four assists.
Clark cleaned up on the glass grabbing six rebounds, all off the
defensive glass. Clark's only two points came off the two
free-throws in overtime that gave her team a 58-55 advantage.
Georgia College's defense forced 22 turnovers but only managed
to score 13 points off Southwestern's mistakes. The 'Cats
were able to capitalize off points in the paint as they outscored
the Hurricanes 30-14.
Georgia Southwestern had five players score in double-digits.
Brittany Reynolds had the team-high with 16, while Bivins finished
with 11 and Kanita Holloway, Nadirah Gardner and Wiltz each had 10
points. Wiltz finished the game with a double-double adding 12
rebounds.
