Box Score PEMBROKE, N.C. –
Georgia College men's basketball (9-8, 3-6 PBC) ended a
heartbreaking road trip with a 66-63 loss at UNC Pembroke (12-7,
5-6 PBC) Sunday afternoon. The loss was the fourth straight for the
Bobcats.
The two teams pushed the score to 62-62
following a layup by Reece Wiedeman
(Suwanee, Ga.) with 45 seconds showing on the game clock
but UNCP would grab the next lead with 18 seconds remaining on a
jumper by senior Chris Hargrove. A foul at the other end would put
Jared
Holmes (Indianapolis) at the line where he would miss
the first and make the second to leave the score at 64-63 in favor
of UNCP, 10 seconds left.
A foul to stop the clock put UNCP's Marcus
Heath at the line, where he drained both shots to give the Braves a
66-63 lead. The ensuing play resulted in a turnover by Georgia
College, giving UNCP its first win in the last five games.
Wiedeman led GC with 16 points, hitting
5-of-8 from the floor and 6-of-9 from the line. Holmes had 13
points to go with a team-high eight rebounds, all off the defensive
glass. Reserve Mike Augustine
(Waterloo, Ill.) knocked down a pair of threes as part of
his 10 points. Both benches performed admirably tonight, as UNCP
took the bench-point battle 30-28.
Reserves Nate Priest and Hargrove had 14 and
11 points, respectively for the Braves, with the former yanking
down a game-high nine rebounds. Kristen Hobbs had another 14 points
from a starting guard spot.
UNCP led in rebounds 40-33, and shot slightly
better at 40 percent (20-50) compared to GC's 35 percent (19-54).
The 'Cats took the turnover battle 17-13.
Georgia College hasn't lost four straight
games since dropping the final three games of the 2004-05 season,
and combining that with a season-opening loss in 2005-06. To find
the last time GC dropped four straight in the same season, one
would have to go to the 2003-04 season, when the Bobcats lost eight
in a row.
The Bobcats return home to play PBC foe North
Georgia (7-11, 4-5 PBC) for Relay for Life Night Wednesday, Feb. 2
at 7:30 p.m. The Saints have won four in a row, including a 92-75
game over Armstrong Atlantic Saturday.
