MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College women's soccer team (6-9-1, 4-6 PBC) put on a fireworks show in an exciting 8-0 victory over Georgia Southwestern State University (0-17, 0-11 PBC) Wednesday at Bobcat Field. The eight goals in a match ties the Georgia College record, set in 2006.
"I am really happy for the ladies that they got the win tonight," said head coach Hope Clark. "We really needed the three points as we get down into the home-stretch of the season. It was great to see a lot of players get minutes throughout the match. We are extremely happy about the successful offense that took place on the field."
Senior Ashley Veilleux (Monroe) made her way into the program's record book in yet another category by the end of tonight's match. She now stands alone as the only player in Georgia College history to record two hat tricks in their career. Her impressive mark started in the first half when she batted the ball into the back of the net after the Hurricane goalkeeper could not hold on to a shot by Lindsey Knott (Macon). In the 66th minute, Veilleux received a well-placed pass from Nicole Moore (Ramsey, New Jersey) and buried the ball from deep inside the box. The record setting goal for Veilleux was set up by fellow senior Abby Dalton (Macon) late in the second half during the 78th minute. She now holds 29 goals in her career, good for second place in school history.
A total of five Bobcats scored throughout the match. Freshman Maddie Stephen (Norcross) got the show started early with her second goal of the season in just the eighth minute of play. Fellow freshman Rahliat Animashaun (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) took control of a pass from Dalton and breezed past the goalkeeper for her first of two goals during the match. She would go on to score the final goal for the Bobcats in the 87th minute off an assist from Jordan Harman (Suwanee).
Cayce Hamilton (Duluth) and Dalton both added their own goals during the second half. Dalton collectively posted two assists and one goal for a successful all-around outing. With 22 career assists, Dalton continues to extend her position as the Bobcat leader. She is also now tied for fourth with 13 career goals, linked with Lyric Burnett (2006-09) and Megan McAlpin (2008-11).
Tonight's match as a whole will go down in the record books, as the Bobcat squad logged a staggering 48 shots. The effort marks the most shots taken in a single match in program's history, passing the 46 shots against GSW in 2008. Netting eight goals also puts them in a tie for the most goals scored in a match. The last Bobcat squad to do so was in 2006 against Erskine College.
Tonight's match makes Georgia College 4-6 in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play, placing them eighth in the conference standings with 12 points The Bobcats have one match left on the schedule, and must win if they want to keep their PBC Tournament hopes alive.
The Bobcats return to Bobcat Field Saturday, Nov. 1 at 3 p.m. to celebrate "Senior Day" and take on Flagler College.
