MILLEDGEVILLE, GA – Georgia College Soccer (7-7-1, 4-7 PBC) netted two goals to take down the visiting Bearcats of Lander University (3-11-1, 2-8-1 PBC), 2-0.
The Bobcats came to play Wednesday night, scoring their first goal just three minutes into the game. Junior Bobcat Amanda Bartholomew (Peachtree City) extended her scoring streak to four games after she gathered the ball at the top of the box, turned and faced the net, then finessed a ground ball inside the right side post for the score. Bartholomew now has eight goals on the year, six of those coming in the last four games.
Georgia College threatened again late in the first half when Bartholomew dished the ball of to junior Sofia Lekas (Lizella) who made a shifty move to create some space then fired a bullet off the crossbar from about 30 yards out. Georgia College maintained their lead with solid defense throughout the first half and went into the break with a 1-0 advantage.
Georgia College collected an insurance goal in the 78th minute off a free kick from senior Sol Baldassini (Miami, Florida). The senior lofted a relatively deep ball into the box where she found sophomore Amanda Ferry (Duluth) on the far side post who maneuvered a header in the net for the first goal of her collegiate career. Baldassini picked up the assist, now leading Bobcats with four on the year.
The Bobcats had a 2-0 lead late in the game, and they maintained that cushion with a nice defensive stop by Emily Wilhelm (Suwanee) in the 86th minute. The senior was defending a corner kick on the far post, where she blocked a header that would have certainly scored if she were not there. The stop by Wilhelm kept the game out of reach, and sealed a win for the Bobcats.
Georgia College Soccer now only has one remaining game on their schedule against National No. 5 Columbus State University. They travel to Columbus this Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1p.m. The Bobcats are still in playoff contention, but need a win out at Columbus this weekend to seal a spot in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament.
