Upset Bid Falls Short for GC Women's Basketball in PBC Opener, 61-54

Box Score

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Georgia College Women's Basketball team (1-4, 0-1 PBC) went toe-to-toe with the Peach Belt Conference's (PBC) top-ranked squad in both team's conference opener Monday, the Bobcats falling 61-54 at No. 24 Lander University (4-1, 1-0 PBC).

Senior guard Brianna Davis (Rockford, Illinois) couldn't have picked a better time for a career-high 18 points, knocking down four three-pointers to lead the Bobcats in scoring. Classmate Alyah McGriff (Suwanee, Georgia) added 12 points and junior Erin Drynan (Chicago, Illinois) 11.

Georgia College had trouble with the Bearcat defensive pressure, turning the ball over 29 times while causing just 14 Lander turnovers, resulting in a 30-9 Bearcat lead in points-off-takeaways.

The Bobcats kept the game tight, actually splitting quarters with Lander; Georgia College winning the second and fourth. The Bobcats got it down to a one possession game at 56-54 with 16 seconds left, but Lander kept Georgia College at a distance by knocking down 5-of-6 free-throws after that point.

McGriff posted a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double, her second in five games this season. Drynan helped with seven rebounds, as the Bobcats won the battle on the boards 39-34. Davis netted 11 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter.

GC Women's Basketball is back in action Saturday, Dec. 2 at 1:30 p.m., playing their PBC home opener against Augusta University.
