DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The Georgia College Women's Basketball team (12-7, 6-5 PBC) dopped its 19th game of the season to the University of North Georgia Nighthawks (17-5, 9-4 PBC) despite two double-digit scoring games from Alyah McGriff (Suwanee) and Veronica Ryan (Clearwater, Florida).
The Bobcat defense kept the Nighthawks at bay in the first quarter, allowing only 12 points before the period switch. The Bobcats started the second quarter just two points back, 12-10. McGriff netted 13 points in the first half, which helped the Bobcats gain 16 points in the second quarter. With North Georgia held to only 10 points, the Bobcats led into the lockerrroom at half, 26-22.
The Nighthawks came out of halftime with a more focused approach. They brought their 11 turnovers from the first half down to six in the second. The Bobcats still held a small lead going into the final quarter, 39-36, but the Bobcat defense couldn't seem to hold the Nighthawk offensive in the fourth period. North Georgia outscored the Bobcats in the fourth, 24-15, making the final score 60-54.
The Bobcats shot better on the floor, draining 39 percent of the shots they took compared to the Nighthawks' 35.7 percent average. Georgia College also capitalized on turnovers more than their counterparts. The Bobcats secured 16 points of Nighthawk mistakes. But the Bobcats got significantly out-rebounded, 22 boards to UNG's 41 total.
McGriff once again came in at the top of the roster for the Bobcats. Her 15-point match marks her 11th double-digit scoring game of the season. She also gathered all four blocks for the Bobcats.
Ryan came in second with 11 points, and Ta'Asia Wright (Denmark, South Carolina) topped the squad in boards with six rebounds.
The Bobcats come home for their next Peach Belt Conference (PBC) match-up Monday. They battle the cats of Columbus State University Feb. 6 at 5:30 p.m. in the Centennial Center.
