MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Led by 20-plus efforts from Keyonna Wesley (Pearson) and Harper Vick (Marietta), the Georgia College Women's Basketball team (1-0, 1-0 PBC) started off the season on the right foot Saturday, topping USC Aiken (0-2, 0-1 PBC) 61-55 at home.
Wesley netted a career-high 24 points, hitting half of her shots from the field (8-16) and from long range (4-8) on the day. She also pulled in seven boards. Vick scored 21, hitting nine field goals and also nabbing six rebounds.
The Bobcats trailed in the early going, dropping the first quarter by a slim 18-14 margin. Both teams tightened the defensive clamps in the second quarter, the Bobcats allowing a stifling three points over the entire 10 minute frame. The defense seemed to spark the GC Women, as the Bobcats won the third and never trailed in the fourth to seal the win.
GC dominated the rebounding effort by snagging 50 to just 30 for the Pacers. The work on the glass was led by a pair of seniors, as Kenyatta Storms (Alpharetta) and Dakota Williamson (Johns Creek) each tallied eight rebounds. GC also did a solid job getting to the line, making 10 free throws to just five for USCA.
With her two assists today, Storms now has 243 in her career, passing Kisha Gaines (2001) for 10th in school history.
GC Women's Hoops is now 2-0 in home openers under head coach Ross Jolly, and have won four straight home openers overall. The victory also broke a three-year stretch of losses in season opening matchups for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, Jan. 13 at 5:30 p.m., traveling to Georgia Southwestern State University.
