GREENWOOD, S.C. – With a bit of second-half fireworks, the Georgia College Soccer squad (8-6, 3-5 PBC) came out on the short end of a 2-1 result at Lander University (9-4-1, 6-2 PBC) Saturday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half, the Bobcat struck first in the 61st minute. Senior Alyssa Bergamini (West Suffield, Connecticut) netted her third goal this season to put the Bobcats up 1-0.
It took 15 minutes for the Bearcats to answer, getting the equalizer from Emma Sexton off a Mary Moosbrugger assist. Lander took their first lead of the match in the 81st minute off a score from Romie Llewellyn.
The Bobcats fought hard to find a tying score over the final 9:30, including a corner kick with just over a minute left, but couldn't force overtime.
Sophomore Kate Richardson (Marietta, Georgia) made four saves in the loss, while Bearcat keeper Sarah Owen tallied five stops. The Bobcats were out-shot 17-12 overall, but Lander turned up the pressure in the second half, getting 16 of their shots after halftime.
The loss puts GC at 3-5, positioned sixth in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) standings with nine points. The Bobcats have one conference matchup remaining on the schedule.
The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 5 p.m., hosting Queens University for the final home match of 2021.
