MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College Men's Tennis team (4-7, 2-5 PBC) closed the 2021 season and picked up a win on Senior Day, nearly running the table on Francis Marion University (2-12, 0-7 PBC) 6-1 Friday at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility.
GC took the doubles point with wins in the second and third lines.
Senior Cole Heller (Woodstock) teamed with freshman Sebastian Nunez (Buford) for the first time, getting a 6-2 finish in the second slot over Leonel Gonzalez and Adam Ernberg.
After a loss for the first doubles pairing of senior Matt Rogel (Sautron, France) and Enzo Sergi (Nice, France) 7-5 to Mauricio Guerrero and William Anth-Forsberg the Bobcats got a win in the third pairing. There, another new pairing of sophomore Jack Sorel (Alpharetta) and freshman Jorge Robinson (Entre Rios, Argentina) got a win over David Bodson and Joshua Schaefer 7-5.
FMU evened the team score at 1-1 with the initial singles result, as Anth-Forsberg beat Robinson in second singles 6-0, 6-1. The Bobcats then swept the remaining singles results for the dominant win. In third singles, Sergi beat Gonzalez 6-0, 6-1, then Rogel won over Guerrero 6-3, 6-2.
Sophomore Jesus Villamizar Abia (Venezuela) clinched the team win with his fourth slot victory, taking down Bodson 6-2, 6-0. Next came fifth singles, featuring a pair of 6-3 sets and a win for Heller over Ernberg. Nunez finished it off in the sixth slot, beating Schaefer in a come-from-behind effort 4-6, 6-3, 10-2.
Rogel finishes the year with a team-best 6-5 record. Sergi joins him at over .500 with a 5-4 mark. Villamizar Abia moved to 2-8, while Heller and Nunez both finish at 1-3.
The match brings a close to the 2021 season for Bobcat Men's Tennis. GC looks to return to action with tournaments in the fall.
