AIKEN, S.C.- The Georgia College Women's Basketball Team (8-14, 5-8 PBC) took the 67-62 win at USC Aiken (7-14, 3-10 PBC) Wednesday. The Bobcats evened the season series with the road victory.
Freshman Alexa Geary (Cahloun, Georgia) had an outstanding night as she netted a career high of 26 points. Her previous career best was 17, just a game ago in the Saturday win over Augusta University. Geary went 5-for-9 from behind the arc Wednesday against USCA and 5-for-6 from the stripe as she led both teams in points.
The Bobcats had two other double digit scorers in Harper Vick (Marietta, Georgia) with 12 and Ashyia Willis (Gainesville, Georgia) with 10. Willis had an impressive performance from the free-throw line going 6-for-6.
The 6-foot-3 freshman Savannah Casey (Canton, Georgia) led the rebounding charge pulling in eight with five coming under the Pacer basket. Casey also netted five points and had three blocked shots. Cassidy Markle (Cumming, Georgia) and Geary had six rebounds apiece for the second most on the squad. Markle banked five points going 3-for-4 from the stripe.
The Bobcats dominated the first quarter, scoring 19 on the Pacer defense. GC out-shot USCA in every aspect in the first quarter as well as out rebounded them 14 to 10. Once the Bobcats scored their first basket they carried the lead for the entirety of the first quarter. GC was out-shot in the second quarter 23-17 but still went into the half with the 36-35 lead.
Coming out of the halftime break, the scoring was slow for both sides as the Pacers out-scored GC 13-7. The Bobcats managed to shoot for 50% from behind the arc compared to the USCA's 25%. Coming into the final quarter, the Bobcats were trailing 48-43 but managed to snag the lead back and the win. GC also had a rebounding margin in the fourth over the Pacers at 14-8.
The Pacers brought the deficit to just two points at 59-57 with 55 seconds left. The Bobcats iced the game at the free-throw line, knocking down their final eight attempts as a team.
The win puts the Bobcats at 5-8 in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play, tied for sixth in the league standings. The top eight qualify for the PBC Tournament in March.
The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Feb. 12 in the Centennial Center to take on Georgia Southwestern State University. Tip off is set for 1:30 p.m. with live stats and video links available at GCBobcats.com.
