MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College & State University Women's Basketball team (10-7, 2-5 PBC) used three double-digit scorers and a great defensive effort to defeat Young Harris College (6-9, 2-5 PBC), 65-57 Wednesday night in the Centennial Center.
Junior Myra Strickland (Duluth) led GCSU with 13 points in her first start of the season. She went 3-for-5 from long range. Sophomore Rose Bone (Monroe) had her best scoring output in her first start as well, pouring in 11 points, including the first two buckets of the game. Senior Harper Vick (Marietta) added 10 points including an 8-for-8 effort at the free-throw line.
YHC scored the first two points of the game, but after Bone knocked down turnaround jumpers from the baseline on consecutive Bobcat possessions, the Mountain Lions would never lead again.
The Bobcats led by as much as 20 at the 59 second mark in the third quarter when Strickland knocked down a three. Young Harris made things interesting in the fourth, closing to within seven with a minute left in the game. The Mountain Lions could inch no closer.
GCSU held the Mountain Lions to just 29 percent (20-70) shooting from the field in a great defensive effort. The Bobcats knocked down seven threes and shot 42 percent (22-53) overall for the night. The Bobcats tightened the defensive effort on Mackenzie Johnson, one of the top players in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC). Johnson came in averaging 17 points and 14 rebounds per game, and managed just five points and nine boards.
The win gives the Bobcats a series sweep over YHC this season. The Bobcats also reach double-digit victories for the first time since the 2018-19 campaign. GCSU also owns the all-time series at 13-9.
The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Jan. 21 at 1:30 p.m., traveling to Clayton State University.
