YOUNG HARRIS, Ga . | Crystal Corley and Trinity Edwards each scored 19 points to lead Young Harris College past Georgia College & State University 70-61 in a non-conference women's basketball contest Friday (Nov. 10) evening at the Harp Recreation & Commencement Center.
The Mountain Lions, who were members of the Peach Belt Conference until last summer before moving to Conference Carolinas, improved to 1-0, while the Bobcats fell to 0-1. GCSU returns to action in the Enchanted Valley for a noon game Saturday (Nov. 11) against Emmanuel (Ga.) University.
After seeing the Mountain Lions score the game's first five points, the Bobcats battled back to take their lone lead at 10-9 after
Hannah Cail sank a three-pointer with 5:32 left in the first quarter. YHC broke open the game with nine unanswered points to take an 18-10 lead after an old-fashioned three-point play by Kamryn Bates, who finished with 17 points, with 2:41 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Mountain Lions pushed their lead to 15 points (39-24) at the half before taking their largest margin - 21 points (49-28) - with 6:32 left in the third quarter on a Taylor Gardner layup. GCSU used a 12-2 run - including nine in a row - to trim the deficit to 11 points (51-40) on a
Myra Strickland three-pointer with 3:24 left in the third quarter. Strickland led the Bobcats with 10 points.
Young Harris quelled the Bobcat rally with six unanswered points to take a 17-point lead (57-40) on a Corley layup. The closest the Bobcats would get the rest of the way was seven points (68-61) after
Bailey Vick swished a three-pointer with 30 seconds remaining in the game.
The Mountain Lions shot 49.1 percent (27-of-55) from the field, while the Bobcats shot 24.3 percent (17-of-70). GCSU sank nine three-pointers in the contest with Strickland and Cail converting two each. Georgia College outrebounded the Mountain Lions 48-40 and scored 20 points off YHC's 14 turnovers. GCSU also tallied 20 second-chance points.
Cail finished with nine points, while
Jaleah Storr,
Ashyia Willis and
Cierra Foster added six each for the Bobcats.
Jada Warren led GCSU with six rebounds, while
Alexa Geary and
Alexis Figures had five apiece.
