YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Tyasia Freeman's double double propelled Emmanuel (Ga.) University past Georgia College & State University 78-68 in a non-conference women's basketball game Saturday (Nov. 11) afternoon at the Haro Recreation & Commencement Center on the Young Harris College campus.
The Lions improved to 2-0, while the Bobcats slipped to 0-2. GCSU returns to Milledgeville for its home opener at the Centennial Center Wednesday (Nov. 15) when they face Fort Valley State University in a 6 p.m. contest.
Emmanuel scored the game's first five points and expanded it to 10 points (16-6) after a Freeman layup with 3:43 to go in the first quarter. The Bobcats fought back and trimmed the deficit to two points (23-21) on
Ashyia Willis' jumper with 6:56 remaining before halftime, but that was as close as GCSU would get as the Lions closed out the second quarter on a 16-7 to take a 37-28 lead at halftime.
Emmanuel broke the game open in the beginning minutes of the third quarter as they used a 10-0 run to take a 20-point lead (52-32) on a Freeman layup with 5:22 left. Freeman was 10-of-16 from the floor. GCSU would get as close as eight points (66-56) after a
Hannah Cail three-pointer with 4:00 left in the game. Cail, who was 5-of-7 from the floor and connected on all three of her three-pointers, led the Bobcats with 13 points.
Willis (12) and
Myra Strickland (11) also finished in double figures for GCSU, while
Cierra Foster added eight.
Jada Warren led the Bobcats with 10 rebounds. Strickland pulled down six boards, while
Dashaun Jackson collected five more.
