Upset bid falls short on Nighthawk buzzer beater, 71-69

DAHLONEGA, Ga.- Georgia College & State University Women's Basketball was just shy of the upset over the University of North Georgia in 71-69 loss on Wednesday.

GCSU fell to 7-6 on the year and 1-2 in Peach Belt Conference play. UNG improved to 10-3 and 3-0 in the conference. Georgia College returns to the Centennial Center Saturday, Jan. 13 to take on Flagler College at 1:30 p.m.

The Bobcats had an outstanding fourth quarter outscoring the Nighthawks 26-19 to overcome a nine point deficit entering the quarter. Ashyia Willis made two free throws after getting fouled on a layup to tie the game at 69 a piece with under six second left to play. UNG called a timeout to move the inbound to their half of the court and were able to score the final basket of the game of the 71-69 win.

Four double-digit shooters led to offensive success in the contest for GCSU despite the loss. Myra Strickland continues to shine for the Bobcats as she put up 18 points to lead the team. She iced five shots from the floor including four buckets from long range. Strickland also added a perfect 4-for-4 day from the free throw line. Hannah Cail had the second most points on the evening with seven field goals including two from three-point range. Willis was the team's third leading scorer with 11 points just shy of her season high, 12. Willis had three buckets from field goal range and iced a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line including two which tied the contest in the fourth. Jaleah Storr rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points. Storr shot 50 percent from both the floor and behind the arc while shooting 75 percent from the free throw line. Willis and Cierra Foster led the team in assists with six and four, respectively.

The Bobcats had a superb day under the basket nabbing 45 rebounds to North Georgia's 28. Jada Warren paved the way for this team performance leading the squad with 12. She picked up seven offensive rebounds leading to her scoring two buckets while she eliminated the UNG threat with seven defensive rebounds. Strickland had a well rounded performance with the second most rebounds as she brought in seven. She was also a large part in eliminating second chance opportunities for North Georgia as she claimed six defensive rebounds. Dashaun Jackson and Alexa Geary both had six rebounds to round out the rebound leaders.
