MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Tomiyah Alford led Augusta University with 25 points as the Jaguars took a 76-67 Peach Belt Conference women's basketball victory over Georgia College & State University Wednesday (Jan. 31) evening inside the Centennial Center.
The Jaguars improved to 13-6 overall and moved into second place in the PBC with a 7-2 ledger, while the Bobcats fell to 9-10 and 3-6. GCSU hits the road to start the second half of the league schedule Saturday (Feb. 3) with a 1:30 p.m. contest against the University of South Carolina-Aiken in Aiken, South Carolina.
After Augusta took a 36-32 halftime lead, the Jaguars expanded their lead to nine points (43-34) on an old-fashioned three-point play from Kennedi Manning with 8:39 remaining in the third quarter, but the Bobcats used seven unanswered points to close to within a point at 45-44 on a
Hannah Cail three-pointer with 5:34 to go. GCSU retook the lead at 48-47 on an
Ashyia Willis converted an Augusta turnover into a layup with 2:45 left in the quarter.
Augusta took the lead for good at 50-48 on an Yamani Paul jumper less than a minute later. GCSU got as a close as a point at 65-64 after Cail nailed another three-pointer with 2:12 left in the game, but the Jaguars reeled off the next seven points to open up a 71-64 lrad after two Kalen Surles free throws.
Cail led the Bobcats with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field, while Willis posted 15 on 7-of-11 shooting. Willis also dished out six assists.
Dashaun Jackson led GCSU with seven rebounds.
Myra Strickland added nine points, while
Miracle Parker had eight and
Alexa Geary added seven more.
