MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Myra Strickland's 1,000th point in her collegiate career paved the way for the Georgia College & State University women's basketball team's Peach Belt Conference win over the University of South Carolina-Aiken 81-78 Saturday (Jan. 6) afternoon at the Centennial Center.
GCSU improved to 7-5 on the season and 1-1 in the Peach Belt . USCA fell to 4-8 on the season and 0-2 in the conference. Georgia College will dive deeper into conference play Wednesday (Jan. 10) on the road at the University of North Georgia for a 5:30 p.m. tip off.
Strickland's three-pointer from the right corner with 4.2 seconds left broke the 78-all tie and secured the GCSU victory.
The Bobcat offense was electric in the conference home opener with the Pacers as they shot 65 percent as a team from behind the three point arc.
Myra Strickland led the charge as she banked 23 points, good for her season high, while going 5-for-6 from behind the arc. On her second basket of the contest, she netted her 1,000th career point.
Alexa Geary had a hot hand as the team's second leading scorer with an impressive 17 points. Geary went 6-for-12 overall and 4-for-7 from long range.
Hannah Cail rounded out the double-digit scoring as she iced 16 points. Cail also had a great day from outside the arc going 4-for-5. The Bobcat offense had 22 assists on day with
Ashyia Willis and
Cierra Foster led the effort with five each.
Georgia College had a great day in the rebounding game nabbing 41 rebounds to the Pacers' 39. The big forwards
Jada Warren and
Dashaun Jackson led the team both picking up seven. They both had a majority of their rebounds under the USCA basket with Jackson nabbing six and Warren corralling five.
Miracle Parker, Cail and Strickland all picked up four rebounds each to contribute to the effort.
