MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Tiara Lewis and Tionna Baker of Shorter University combine for 39 points at the Georgia College & State University Bobcats fall in a nailbiting 64-60 loss in a non-conference women's basketball game Wednesday (Nov. 20) night inside the Centennial Center.
The Bobcats dropped their first game of the season, falling to 4-1, while the Hawks improved to 2-1. GCSU will continue the homestand on Saturday (Nov. 23) when they host North Greenville University at 2 p.m.
The Bobcats quickly fell behind 10-0 within the game's first few minutes, although they furiously stormed back and kept the scoring close at halftime. After a Miracle Parker jumper, the Bobcats were able to even up the score at 28 points for the first tie in the game. The Hawks' lead decreased to four, and the halftime score ended at 36-32.
The Bobcats and the Hawks traded leads 10 times during the second half. Jada Warren capped off her night with 11 total rebounds, five offensive and six defensive, giving the Bobcats ample opportunities to keep the score close. A Warren tip-in gave the Bobcats a lead (60-59) with 3:04 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Baker, who finished with a team-high 22 points, hit the front end of two free throws to tie the game at 60 with 2:39 left and stayed that way until Baker converted two free throws with 25 seconds to go to give the Hawks, who were 17-of-24 from the charity stripe, a 62-60 lead. Derrica McCall added two insurance free throws with four seconds left to seal the win.
Lewis finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds for Shorter.
Hannah Cail led the Bobcats with 14 points and five rebounds, while Evie DePetro added 13 points. Ashyia Willis also finished in double figures with 10 points.
