SAINT LEO, Fla. | The Georgia College & State University men's tennis team dropped a pair of 4-3 heartbreakers at the PTR Collegiate Cup hosted by Saint Leo University Saturday (Feb. 3).
The Bobcats dropped a 4-3 decision to Tusculum University in the semifinals before losing 4-3 to former Peach Belt Conference-foe Francis Marion University in the third-place match.
GCSU fell to 0-2 and will return home Tuesday (Feb. 6) to face No. 1 Valdosta State University at the GCSU Tennis Courts. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead after doubles as GCSU claimed victories at the No. 2 and 3 flights. After the Pioneers took the first win in singles, Georgia College reclaimed the lead a 2-1 after
Luka Sauer Jimenez picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2. Tusculum took the next two matches, before GCSU tied the match at 3 after
Braxton Wright recorded a 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5. Tusculum sealed the win at No. 6 singles as Tijn van Gorkom earned a 7-6 (4), 7-5 win over
Enzo Sergi.
Francis Marion took the doubles point, but
Noé Villen and
Rodrigo Pérez Crespo picked up a 6-3 win at No. 3 for the Bobcats. GCSU battled back to tie the match at two as Villen earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles and Sauer took a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory in the second flight. Again the Patriots took the lead before
Sebastian Nuñez retied the match at 3 for the Bobcats with a 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (2) decision at No. 6. FMU claimed the match as Leonel Gonzalez took a 7-5, 6-7 (3), 6-2 win over Crespo at No. 3 singles.
