Nighthawks outlast Bobcats 72-64

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Kendall Emener and Isabel Davenport each scored 15 points to lead the University of North Georgia to a 72-64 Peach Belt Conference women's basketball victory Wednesday (Feb. 7) evening inside the Centennial Center.

The Nighthawks improved to 14-7 overall and to 7-4 in the Peach Belt, while Bobcats slipped to 10-11 and 4-7. Georgia College will travel to St. Augustine, Florida, Saturday (Feb. 10) for a 3:30 p.m. league contest against Flagler College.

North Georgia scored the game's first five points, but the Bobcats scored the next 12 points - eight from Ashyia Willis - to open up a 12-5 lead on a Willis jumper with 6:15 remaining in the first quarter. Georgia College opened up its first double-digit lead - 10 points (27-17) - after Myra Strickland sank a three-pointer with just under five minutes remaining in the second period.

The Bobcats led 31-27 at the half and pushed their advantage to eight (45-37) after a Miracle Parker free throw with 1:39 left in the third quarter. UNG tied the game for the first time at 51 on an Ansley Hall jumper with 6:12 left in the game, but GCSU retook the lead 55-51 on a four-point play from Jaleah Storr less than 30 seconds later.

The Nighthawks took their first lead since the first quarter (57-55) on an Emily Trushel three-pointer with 5:11 to go. A three-pointer from Strickland tied the game at 58 with just over four minutes remaining. Hall then gave the Nighthawks the lead for good at 61-58 six seconds later with a three-pointer.

Strickland led the Bobcats, who led for 32 minutes, with 13 points and three steals, while Willis finished with 12 points and four rebounds. Storr added 10 points and four rebounds. Jada Warren pulled down 10 rebounds to go seven points and two blocked shots. GCSU outrebounded North Georgia 43-35, including a 14-5 margin on the offensive glass.
