MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Freshman center
Elizabeth Wynn's 25-point, 18-rebound double-double propelled Georgia College & State University to a comeback 67-63 non-conference women's basketball victory over Mars Hill University Tuesday (Nov. 25) night inside the Centennial Center.
The Bobcats and head coach Catrina Green collected their first win of the season and of their collegiate head coaching careers, respectively, as GCSU improved to 1-4, while the Lions suffered their second loss of the season, falling to 3-2. The Bobcats return after a short Thanksgiving break, as they open up Peach Belt Conference play with a matchup against Clayton State University on Wednesday (Dec. 3) at 5:30 p.m. inside the Centennial Center.
The Bobcats opened the scoring with a decisive 20-4 run toward the end of the first quarter, fueled by three-pointers from Sloane Vick and Molly Burns, as well as a pair of tip-ins from Wynn.
Mars Hill chipped into the lead toward the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second; however, three-pointers from Nylah Nuri and Bailey Vick brought the Bobcat lead back to 15 (28-13). The Lions still had some bite, with consecutive three-pointers from Stella McIntyre and Kindan Dawson to cut into the lead. A final three-pointer from the Lions' Jadein Haynes to conclude scoring in the half put the Bobcat lead at seven (32-25).
The Lions opened up the second half furiously, with two jumpers and a layup from Makayla Street to continue to dwindle the Bobcat lead, and another three-pointer from Haynes brought the deficit to two. A jump shot from Adrainna Gullette tied the game for the Lions at 38, the first tie since the beginning of the game. A pair of free throws from Gullette later concluded the half, with the Bobcats holding a one-point lead at 47-46.
Mars Hill quickly took its first lead of the game with a layup from Felesia Ondongo, and continued to add on with a pair of three-pointers from Dawson and Street, making it a 10-point lead (61-51). However, the Bobcats fought back with layups from Sloane Vick and Wynn, as well as a three-pointer from Caroline Beavin, to start the battle. Wynn went on to close the fight, using a layup, a tip-in, and a jumpshot to close out the victory for the Bobcats.
Wynn's 25 points led the Bobcats, followed by Sloane Vick with 10 and Beavin and Nuri with nine. Wynn's 18 rebounds also led the Bobcats, while Beavin collected 10 boards, and Deshona Gaither gathered nine of the glass. Gaither assisted seven times to lead GCSU, while Beavin had five assists.
The Bobcats had 62 total rebounds and 30 offensive boards, four and one rebounds away from tying the GCSU program records, respectively.
