MORROW, Ga. | Hannah Cail led three Georgia College & State University players in double figures as the Bobcats held off a late challenge from Clayton State University for a 67-64 Peach Belt Conference women's basketball victory Wednesday (Feb. 19) evening at the Loch.
The Bobcats swept the season series with the Lakers as they improved 15-10 overall and solidified their hold on fourth place in the PBC standings with three regular season games remaining. GCSU returns to the Centennial Center Saturday (Feb. 22) for a 3:30 p.m. homecoming and PBC contest against Georgia Southwestern State University. The Lakers fell to 9-16 and 6-9.
Clayton State led 15-10 after the first quarter, but the Bobcats took a 33-31 lead at the half as
Eva Garabadian sank a three-pointer with a second remaining.
The game saw eight lead changes and five ties. Clayton State tied the game one last time at 43 as Jasmyn Burts hit a jumper with 3:49 remaining in the third quarter. GCSU took the lead for good 48 seconds on a stick back from
Deshona Gaither. That ignited 11 unanswered points by the Bobcats over the next 4:14 as GCSU opened up a 54-43 lead on a
Jada Warren layup with 8:47 to go in the game.
GCSU extended its lead to 14 points (58-44) on an
Ashyia Willis layup after a Laker turnover 70 seconds half. However, Clayton State rallied and pulled within two points (62-60) on a Ky-Leo Worriels free throw after the Lakers put together a 16-4 run over the next three minutes.
Two Gaither free throws with 11 seconds left gave the Bobcats a 65-61 lead, but the Lakers closed to within a point at 65-64 after a stepback three-pointer from Sariya Henry three seconds later. GCSU sealed the win when Cail hit both ends of two free throws with eight seconds left to lead 67-64. Clayton State had two opportunities in the final seconds to hit a three-pointer to send the game into overtime, but didn't connect.
Cail finished with 20 points, while Willis and Warren each tallied 10. Warren recorded a double double as she grabbed 16 rebounds for the Bobcats.
Miracle Parker added nine points while Gaither had nine.
