EVANS, Ga. - After a second half surge, No.
8-seed University of Montevallo (8-8-3) upset a No. 4-seed Georgia
College & State University soccer team (10-6-5) 2-1 in the
semifinals of the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament tonight
(Nov. 6).
The Bobcats dominated the first period of play, looking strong
after an early score. Senior Jamie Nevin (Grovetown,
Ga.) netted the first goal of the contest unassisted off
of a breakaway during the sixth minute. The goal was her second of
the tournament, scoring the first goal in the quarterfinal contest
against North Georgia Tuesday. She finishes with a team high of
five goals for the 2009 campaign.
Patience worked in the Falcons' favor, as they continuously
worked the ball into Bobcat territory in the second half, as Jenna
Kuzemski nudged one in past Georgia College's Mary Rob Plunkett
(Augusta, Ga.) to knot things up at 1-1 during the
80th minute.
In the 87th minute, Erin Duncan took a penalty kick
for Montevallo after being sandwiched between two Bobcat defenders
in the box. Duncan's kick sailed into the right side of the net
past a diving Plunkett. The play marked the second time Georgia
College has been hurt by a penalty kick against the Falcons this
season, tying them during the regular season due to a similar
result.
With just 30 seconds left to play, the 'Cats had all hands
on deck pulling Plunkett out of box and into the play for a Georgia
College corner kick taken by Daria Owen (Snellville,
Ga.). Owen's ball found the head of Plunkett but couldn't
capitalize on that or the ensuing loose-ball opportunity.
In the net, Montevallo's Alyssa Maxwell had snagged five saves,
while all-conference Plunkett lassoed in six. Plunkett finishes the
season with 86 saves and a GAA of 0.59.
Despite a difficult schedule, this was the third-straight
double-digit win season for the Bobcats. Georgia College continues
to be competitive in the Peach Belt, suffering just one loss in PBC
play, and landing six players to the All-PBC teams this season,
more than any other school.
