SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Georgia College & State
University women's soccer team (1-0) kicked off the 2009 season
shutting out Queens (N.C.) University (0-1) 2-0 today (Aug. 29) at
the AASU Pirate Soccer Shootout. The Bobcats picked up where they
left off last year with the shutout, as they posted a school-record
13 blankings a year ago.
The Bobcats spread out the excitement, scoring one goal each
period. The first goal of the day came at 20:41 into the game from
the senior leg of Daria Owen (Snellville,
Ga.) off of a Karen Bonilla
(Manassas, Va.) pass. The goal is Owen's fifth in her
career, and Bonilla's fourth career assist.
Georgia College struck again in the second period when junior
Jessica
Newland (Hiram, Ga.) netted one unassisted in the
85th minute. The Bobcats held off Queens thanks in part
to junior Jessica Binkowski
(Cumming, Ga.), who snagged two saves. GCSU out-shot
Queens 18-6 and won the corner kicks battle 10-5.
"It was a great start," said GCSU head coach Juan Pablo
Favero. "Our defense looked great, and our offense
finished on a couple of nice chances. Good effort today from
everyone, and we're all excited to see how we respond when we have
to get back out there tomorrow."
Today's contest was originally slotted for yesterday afternoon,
but the entire day's worth of play was washed back a day by rain.
After today's victory, the Bobcats improve to 3-2-1 all-time in
season openers, not posting a loss since 2006. They are back in
action tomorrow (Aug. 30) taking on Florida Southern College at
1:30 p.m. to close out the Pirate Soccer Shootout. The Mocs faced
host Armstrong Atlantic State University today.
