GC Volleyball Gets Straight-Set Win for Inaugural Match

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The first Georgia College volleyball (1-0) match in school history ended with a straight-set victory over Fort Valley State University (0-1) Thursday night at the Centennial Center in front of a raucous crowd of over 2,500 fans.

The Bobcats put sets of 25-4, 25-20 and 25-15 on the board.

The first kill in school history came on the very first attack, as Blake Willoughby (Savannah, Ga.) dropped one in on the Wildcats for the 1-0 lead.

The team leader in kills was Haley Ashworth (Cumming, Ga.) with seven in 15 attacks. Sydney Stripling (Douglasville, Ga.) was a close second with six, while Rachel Reynolds (Marietta, Ga.) and Ashley Savransky (Roswell, Ga.) added five each.

Savransky had an amazing attack percentage of .833 (5-6), while Reynolds had five kills in seven tries for a .714 percentage.

Both setters ran the offense well, Micayla Patterson (Tyrone, Ga.) with 21 assists in two sets, and Kaitlyn Lattimer (Buford, Ga.) taking the second set for 10 assists. Caroline Ham (Marietta, Ga.) led the team in both digs (6) and service aces (4), as the Bobcats recorded a 14-2 advantage in aces as a squad.

Georgia College hit .267 as a team, including a .379 effort in the first set. Fort Valley State hit -.019 on the day. Briana Shepard led the Wildcats with four kills, Quashavis Ross paced the squad with eight digs, and Karli Brown ran the offense with eight assists.

The final point of the day came on a block, as Savransky and Reynolds teamed up for the rejection, igniting a roar from the Bobcat fans.

The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow, Sept. 6 in a doubleheader at the West Georgia Tournament, facing Valdosta State University at 2 p.m. and the University of West Alabama at 4:30 p.m.
