Box Score 2 MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College volleyball team (1-2) picked up its first win of the 2015 season Saturday at the Bobcat Classic, and the biggest victory in program history as well, toppling No. 15 Wingate University (3-1) in four sets. The puts the Bobcats at 1-1 on the day after a three-set loss to Limestone College (3-1).
The Bobcats picked up the first ranked win in school history by sweeping the final three sets dropping set one 21-25. What followed was 25-14, 25-21 and 25-21 and the best play the young season has shown for Georgia College.
Rookie Taylor Svehla (Cumming) made her presence felt in contributing 14 points, including a team-best 10 kills on .304 hitting. She added six total blocks, also a team-high.
Junior Blake Willoughby (Savannah) added nine kills, including three with four total blocks in the fourth and deciding set. Freshman setter Kayla Brockway (Jacksonville, Florida) had 36 assists and 22 digs in running both the offense and defense.
Junior Caroline Long (Roswell) and freshman Ebony Powers (Jacksonville, Florida) both narrowly missed double-doubles, with Long having eight kills and 10 digs, Powers adding 14 digs and seven kills. Katie Ray (Cumming) added 18 digs to round out the defensive effort.
The Bobcats started off hot in the final set, rattling off the first six points. It quickly tightened up, as Wingate actually took a 14-12 lead. That would be their lone advantage, however, as the Bobcats responded with another six-point run, taking advantage of four Bulldog attack errors in the process. After trading blows down the stretch, a kill from Svehla sealed the deal.
Georgia College fell in the morning to Limestone by 25-20, 25-21 and 25-22 scores.
Brockway contributed a team-high 10 points by tallying a team-best eight kills, adding an ace and two total blocks. Brockway had 20 assists, while Ray led the team in digs with 17.
Wingate was announced as Tournament Champion, tying for best record at 3-1 and holding victory over the other 3-1 team in Limestone. The All-Tournament Team featured a pair of Wingate players in Abby Saehler and Shelly Stumpff. Joining those two Bulldogs were Limestone's Karli Acree and Natalie Tucker, Shorter University's Elizabeth Dowd, the University of Charleston's Mia Herrod, Columbus State University's Caytlin Merritt and Brockway for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats are back in action Friday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m., traveling to Florence, South Carolina for the Francis Marion Invitational. Georgia College starts with the University of West Alabama and North Greenville University on day one.
