GC Volleyball Nearly Pulls off Region Upset

Box Score

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College Volleyball team (9-21) went five sets with regionally-ranked Queens University, the Bobcats dropping the non-conference matchup Saturday night at the Centennial Center.

The Royals jumped out of lockerroom quickly, taking set one 25-16. The Bobcats made some great adjustments however, to take sets two and three 25-19 and 25-21. GC's attack was particularly impressive in set three, pounding out 16 kills. Queens got a big 9-0 start in set three carrying that to a 25-15 win, forcing the final set.

After an early lead by GC, Queens took over with a seven-point run and when the dust settled, the Royals were up 8-3. The Bobcats battled, but eventually fell 15-10.

Graduate student Sarah Stewart (Savannah) nearly had her second 20-kill match of the season, instead finishing with 19 and 21 digs for a double-double, her 15th this year. Freshman Ally Hall (Cumming) added her 12th double-double with 16 kills and 23 digs.

Senior Lauren Talele (Woodstock) added her 20th double-double of the season with 48 assists and 15 digs. Five players pulled in double-digit digs in the marathon match, led by 27 from sophomore libero Bella DeSalvo (Hamilton, Ohio). Hall had 23, Stewart 21, senior Morgan Overly (St. Simons Island) added 18 and Talele 15. The 18 digs were a career-best for Overly.

The Bobcats are now 3-5 in five-set matches this season, just one of them coming in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play, a win at Augusta University.

With Talele's 48 assists tonight she has 952 on the season, ranking fourth in school history. Stewart now ranks fourth in single season kills with 340, and Hall is also in the top-five with 331 this year.

DeSalvo's 27-dig effort also helped her shift in the GC recordbooks, as she has 641 in her career, passing Nicole Cohen (2019) for eighth. Mary Kate Kotzin (Dunwoody) now owns the freshman record for blocks, passing Emma Boughner (2021) with 103 this year. Kotzin is in her second year with the Bobcats as a Covid-freshman, beating Boughner's mark set in 2017.

The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Nov. 13 at 4 p.m., hosting Young Harris College for senior day.
