ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. | Kaylee Weeks collected 18 kills as the Georgia College & State University women's volleyball team rallied for a five-set victory over the University of South Carolina-Aiken Friday (Nov. 21) evening in the first round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament being played at Flagler Gymnasium.
The Bobcats, who are the tournament's No. 5 seed, won the opening set 25-17 before the Pacers, who were seeded fourth, won the next two games 25-21 and 25-22. GCSUÂ won 25-23 in the fourth game to set up the pivotal fifth set. The Bobcats staved off a match point at 15-14 on an USCA attack error. GCSUÂ took a 16-15 lead on a block by
Nya Warren and
Camryn Carlton. Another Pacer attack error sealed the win for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats snapped their four-match losing streak at the PBC Tournament as GCSU, which has won three matches in a row, improved to 16-15. The Bobcats registered their first PBC Tournament win since 2018 when GCSU advanced to the title match. GCSU will face No. 1 seed and tournament host Flagler College in a 4:30 p.m. semifinal match Saturday (Nov. 22). USC Aiken ended its season at 15-16.
Weeks led the Bobcats with a .283 hitting percentage as she only had three errors in 53 swings.
Lexi Polychrones tallied 11 kills, while Carlton recorded 10 more and
Avery Huyck had nine.
Alanis Bernis led GCSU with 34 digs, while Weeks had 23.
Milla Smith posted 20 digs, while
Riese Johnson had 13.
Johnson distributed 23 assists for GCSU, while
Sadie Parkerson had 22. Warren led the Bobcats with seven total blocks, while Weeks had four and Polychrones and Carlton had three apiece.
