MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College Soccer team (1-3) fell by a single strike Sunday to UNC Pembroke (4-1) with all three goals coming late in the match.
In the first half, possession went largely in UNCP's favor, as they out-shot GC 8-1 in the scoreless first frame. Shots on target were much more even, just a 2-1 advantage in the first half for the Braves.
It took all the way until the 79th minute for the scoreless tie to break, as Rilee Seering headed home a beautiful entry from Nutwadee Pramnack off a corner kick. The pass came straight from the corner, and the 5-foot-7 Seering found the right side of the net with the header for her fifth goal of the season.
The Braves doubled the advantage in the 83rd minute, as Alexis Pittman gathered a loose ball and fired home from deep, about 30 yards out, the ball curling between the leaping arms of Bobcat goalkeeper Kate Richardson (Marietta) and the crossbar. The goal was Pittman's fourth.
GC answered just 57 seconds later to cut the lead in half. Junior Ryann Smith (Sharpsburg) lifted a pass from deep on the right side to the middle of the box, where classmate Alyssa Bergamini (West Suffield, Connecticut) fired home a header on the move for the score. The goal was the first this season for Bergamini, and the 10th of her career.
With the sense of urgency heightened for the final seven minutes, the Bobcats had a potential tying shot from Bergamini saved by UNCP goalkeeper Chiara Coppin in the 89th minute, but couldn't get the equaling score. Richardson finished with five saves for GC, while Coppin made three for the Braves.
The loss snaps a two-match win streak at home for GC Soccer.
The Bobcats are back in action Thursday, March 11 at 5 p.m., hosting USC Aiken. The location of Thursday's contest will be announced in the next few days.
