MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College & State University Volleyball team (11-16, 7-6 PBC) beat an always-tough Flagler College squad (13-8, 7-5 PBC) in five sets Saturday in the Centennial Center. The victory snapped a six-match win streak for Flagler over the Bobcats in the all-time series.
The Saints took the first set, 25-23, with GCSU nabbing the second 25-22. Set three belonged to Flagler with another 25-23 score, and the Bobcats swept the final two, 25-22 and 15-9. GCSU started with a 5-1 run in the fifth set and never surrendered the lead. The final four points went Georgia College's way to close the match.
Graduate student Rachel Machovec (Buckhead) posted an impressive 20-20 match against her former teammates, having played her undergrad career at Flagler. She had 20 kills with 21 digs. Machovec was flanked by 10 kills from junior Callie Miller (Acworth).
The Bobcats did a great job up front, tallying 12 total team blocks for the match. Sophomore Brooke Roberts (Rome) led with seven block assists, while Machovec and Mary Kate Kotzin (Dunwoody) had five each.
Both of the setters also tallied double-doubles, with Riese Johnson (Cumming) going for 16 assists and 10 digs, while starter Emily Long (Mooresville, North Carolina) had 19 assists and 10 digs. Leading the dig effort was freshman Alanis Bernis (Auburn) with 26.
Roberts now has 120 blocks this season, just two behind the school record set by Sarah Mangan (2021) a season ago.
With the win, the Bobcats move to 7-6 in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play, good for fourth in the league standings, a half-game behind Flagler. GCSU has two conference matchups left, and can finish either third or fourth in the league.
The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m., playing host to Flagler once again.
