Box Score 2 MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College & State University Volleyball team (1-2) nabbed its first win of the season in a split of two matches Sunday at the 2022 Bobcat Classic in the Centennial Center. The Bobcats fell to Limestone University (2-1) in five sets, responding with a straight-set victory over Southern Wesleyan University (0-3).
"There was a lot of good today," said head coach Gretchen Krumdieck. "Our first match showed we have a lot of fight. Ending today with a solid team win really gave our young team some confidence going into next weekend.
Against the Saints, the Bobcats started out hot with wins in the first two sets. The set-one win came in extra points 27-25, followed by a 25-19 victory in set two. Backs against the wall, the Scrappy Saints took the next three, 25-20, 25-20, 15-9.
In the marathon, Callie Miller (Acworth) led the attack with 13 kills. Sophomore Brooke Roberts (Rome) joined her in double digits with 11, tying for the team lead with six blocks. Miller posted a double-double, adding 11 digs to the cause, one of five Bobcats with double-digit digs.
Ally Hall (Cumming) led the squad with 20, while setter Emily Long (Mooresville, North Carolina) had a double-double with 13 digs and 26 assists. Alanis Bernis (Auburn) and Miranda Hardin (Suwanee) tallied 12 digs apiece.
The Bobcats had their best match of the young season on the front line, totaling 12 blocks as a team. Roberts, Mary Kate Kotzin (Dunwoody) and Kyeli Hazzard (Heflin, Alabama) shared the lead with six each.
The first win of the season for GCSU came in 25-19, 25-14, 25-20 fashion against the SWU Warriors.
Hall set the tone early with five first-set kills, finishing with a team-best 12 for the match and hitting a blistering .391. She had 12 digs for a double-double. Roberts got into double-figures again with 10, adding five blocks. Long and freshman Riese Johnson (Cumming) split the setting duties, Long picking up 19 assists and Johnson grabbing 16.
The Bobcats are back in action Sept. 2-3 at the Tony Fontanelle Memorial Tournament, hosted by Mars Hill University. Action for GCSU starts Sept. 2 at 11 a.m. against King University, adding a matchup with Coker University later that day.
