AUGUSTA, Ga.- The
Georgia College & State University volleyball team competed at the Peach Belt Conference/Gulf South Conference Crossover Tournament and fell in four sets to both Valdosta State University and the University of Montevallo.
Game one of the day for GCSU was against VSU where the Bobcats took set one from the Blazers, but ultimately fell 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 21-25, 23-25). The first set was outstanding for GCSU as they hit .560 as a team.
Two players had double digit kills and two players barely missed the mark. Rachel Machovec continued her stellar season with another double-double leading the team with 17 kills. Mary Kate Kotzin had the second most kills with 10. Both Rosa Fisher and Camryn Carlton had eight kills which was third most on the team. The Bobcats ran a two setter rotation with Riese Johnson and Lily Swanson. Johnson picked up another double-double on the season as she had 21 assists and 10 digs. Swanson led the squad in assists with 26.
Despite the loss the GCSU defense had a great game with four players nabbing double digit digs. Machovec led the effort with 16 while Alanis Bernis was right behind her with 14. Olivia Alvarez kept 12 points off the board for the Blazers and Johnson rounded out the dig effort with 10. The front row made their presence known as there were 14 block assists and a solo block. Machovec and Kotzin led the blocking efforts with five and four block assists respectively.
The next game for the Bobcats was against the Falcons. GCSU took the first set, but fell 3-1 (25-23, 15-25, 25-27, 17-25).
Similar to the first match the Bobcats had two players with double digit kills. Machovec had the hot swings picking up a new career high of 21 kills. Fisher was the second player with double digit kills with 10. Callie Miller had the third most kills with eight. Picking up 33 assists was Johnson who was just shy of her career high of 35.
Two players had double digit digs in match two of the day and that was Bernis leading with 20 and Machovec with 15. Another outstanding performance from the great wall of Bobcats as there 19 block assists spread between seven different players. Fisher led the effort with four block assists. Ella Collier, Kotzin and Machovec all added three block assists each.
GCSU will wrap up the tournament Saturday (Sept. 16) at 10 a.m. against Mississippi College.
