Hazel Slam Saves Bobcat Sweep, 8-4

Box Score

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College baseball team (3-0) completed a three-game sweep of Mars Hill College (0-3) Sunday at John Kurtz Field, thanks in large part to an eighth-inning grand slam by Steve Hazel (Kentwood, Mich.).

Hazel, who entered the inning before as a pinch hitter, pulled a 2-1 pitch over the right center fence for a no-doubter grand slam in the eighth, part of a five-run rally.

Georgia College got a solid start from Christian Bragg (Augusta, Ga.) in his first Bobcat action, going 5 1/3 innings, allowing just one run. The junior lefty departed in the sixth with a 3-1 lead.

Mars Hill got one in the seventh and two more in the eighth to take the lead 4-3, but Georgia College responded in a big way in the bottom half. Batting around in the inning, the Bobcats tallied five runs on four hits and two walks.

Catcher Cody Maas (Alpharetta, Ga.) had a 3-for-4 day with an RBI. Mikee Moore (Dunwoody, Ga.) and Ryan Sabalaskey (Carol Stream, Ill.) each had two hits, Moore scoring twice, while Sabalaskey drove in one and scored one.

Reliever Daniel Szathmary (Suwanee, Ga.) got the final five outs for the win (1-0), while Lion reliever Thomas Timmerman (0-1) took the loss in just 2/3 of an inning.

Lion leadoff hitter Tommy Scala was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, swatting a solo home run.

The Bobcats are back in action Friday, Feb. 8 at the University of Tampa in doubleheader action.
