Box Score 2 CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Georgia College volleyball team (10-12, 4-9 PBC) picked up double-digit victories for the first time in program history Tuesday night, splitting action in a tri-match at the University of West Georgia. The Bobcats responded to a 3-0 loss to the University of Montevallo (17-8, 9-3 PBC) by taking a five-set victory from UWG (3-20).
"It's always challenging to play on the road and we were slow to start against Montevallo," said Gretchen Krumdieck. "We bounced back and got on track against West Georgia. It was a good battle for us to go to five sets, and we grew a lot as a team tonight."
Montevallo took the three sets by scores of 25-13, 25-22 and 25-19. The Falcon win gives the two programs a split of the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) season series.
Sophomore Bailey Freeman (Hillsbourough, North Carolina) and freshman Taylor Svehla (Cumming) shared the team lead in kills with seven apiece. Freshman Kayla Brockway (Jacksonville, Florida) had a 24-assist, 11-dig double-double. Junior Miller Howard (Suwanee) joined Brockway in double-digit digs with 10.
In the five-set thriller with the Wolves, Georgia College nabbed the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-15. After UWG won the third and fourth 25-23 and 25-18, the Bobcats closed it out in a 15-11 fifth. Junior Caroline Long (Roswell) had just seven total kills, but five in the final set alone, including the final point.
Svehla led the team with 18 kills, as Maggie Roper (Buford) added 11 of her own. Brockway had 55 assists, tying her school record set in September. She added 10 digs for her 10th double-double of the year. Sophomore Katie Ray's (Cumming) 30 digs came just three shy of the school record, set by Ella Anastasiades (Atlanta) in 2014.
The Bobcats are back in action Friday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m., traveling to Flagler College.
