#9 Georgia College Softball Starts Season with Sweep of Queens

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 9 Georgia College Softball team (2-0) stretched its muscle and tossed a couple of shutouts in starting the season with a doubleheader sweep of Queens University (N.C.) (0-2) 4-0 and 8-0 Saturday. The two games were part of the Bobcat Kickoff Tournament at the Peeler Complex.

Three Bobcat pitchers combined to surrender just five hits while fanning 14 over 12 innings.

In game one, senior Marisa Boyette (Marietta) tossed a shutout, buzzing through eight strikeouts while surrendering just a pair of hits and two walks. Boyette's two hits were an infield single to the right side, and a single through the left side. Boyette set down the last 10 Royals in a row.

Scoring started in the bottom of the second. Third baseman Kristen Brooks (Brunswick) led off with a triple to right center, then scored a batter later on a sacrifice fly from first baseman Faith Flanders (Dublin).

A squeeze bunt in the fourth from Lacey Najafi (Suwanee) plated another run, then RBI singles from Taylor Campbell (Warner Robins) and Flanders capped the scoring in the fifth.

Brooks finished the game 2-for-2 with a run, Campbell had a 2-for-3 game with a run and RBI, while Najafi ended with two hits in three trips and the RBI.

Game two showcased the offense, posting multi-run innings over four of the five frames. Campbell exploded for a pair of home runs, driving in four and scoring twice in a 3-for-3 game. Shortstop Baylee Hall (Hephzibah) was 2-for-3 with a triple, scoring twice. Flanders added two more hits in three trips, and a pair of RBIs.

Junior Carly Lewis (Seymour, Tenn.) threw four innings for the win, allowing three hits and a walk while fanning six. Freshman Brooke Taylor (Powder Springs) got three outs in the fifth. A two-run single by Flanders in the bottom half gave Georgia College the eight-run advantage they needed for the run-rule victory.

The Bobcats are back in action Sunday, Jan. 31 at 4:30 p.m. hosting Union University (Tenn.).
